Refind: Introduction to Sustainable Glassmaking
The Refind class offers a hands-on introduction to glassmaking sustainability, blending traditional artistry
with modern environmental responsibility. Participants learn how to ‘open a bottle’ and cut glass into
smaller components that can be assembled into functional and/or decorative pieces. Your instructor B.
Jane Cowie will provide insights into the life cycle of bottle glasses and their environmental impact. By
emphasizing re-use and mindful product creation, the class introduces creative ways to reduce waste and
promote a circular design mindset.

Students will have the chance to see how to cut glass, the results of melting and effective ways to
assemble and shape the glass. Guided by experienced artisans we prioritize safety and ecological
awareness. And beyond technical skills, the Refind class encourages participants to reflect on how design
choices influence sustainability – exploring themes such as energy efficiency, material recovery and local
waste resourcefulness.

This introductory Refind Class is ideal for beginners and sustainability enthusiasts who are eager to
combine creativity with environmental action. By the end of the class, participants will have been able to
craft their own upcycled glass creations but also gain a deeper appreciation for how sustainable practices
can reshape our relationship with materials and consumption. The result is art with purpose – mementos
that tell a story of renewal, responsibility and design innovation.
